Performance Options

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Music Scarborough is offering three different ways to perform and receive adjudication. Participants who choose each option will be adjudicated separately. (ie. live, in person performances will not be judged against live, online performances or recorded performances).

Live, in person

How it works

Participants will be sent one date and time at which to perform all of their pieces, recital-style. Performances will be livestreamed and recorded. Following their performances, participants will be given live adjudication for each piece, detailed written adjudication, and a certificate. All performers will also receive souvenir programs. At the conclusion of the festival, results for each individual class will be released and first-place winners will receive medals by mail or curbside pickup. Live classes and curbside pickup will take place at Grace Christian Reformed Church, 25 Channel 9 Court.

Safety measures

Music Scarborough takes COVID-19 extremely seriously. Live competition will only be held if indoor gatherings of ten people are permitted in Toronto, and the Festival Committee may move in-person performances online at their discretion. While at the venue, the Festival Committee has implemented the following measures:

  1. Medical masks will be required at all times. Participants may choose to cover medical masks with mask covers or fabric masks.
  2. All touched surfaces, including door handles, tables, seating, and most of all, the piano, will be thoroughly cleaned after every performance. Participants will be asked to sanitize their hands before and after touching the piano.
  3. Competitors may bring a maximum of three spectators with them to the festival. Spectators must live in the same household as the competitor. Only spectators, the participant, Music Scarborough staff, and the adjudicator will be allowed in the building.
  4. Prior to attending the festival, all participants and spectators must take a COVID-19 self assessment. Should they fail this self assessment or otherwise feel unwell or uncomfortable, they may perform live from home or submit a recording without additional charges.
  5. Social distancing will be strictly enforced. The adjudicator will be equipped with a microphone and sit more than twelve feet away from the participant and spectators at all times. Music Scarborough staff will also never come within more than 8 feet of a participant or spectator. Social distancing will be facilitated with markers and, in some cases, plastic barriers.
  6. All doors will be kept open to ensure good ventilation. Air purifiers will be located next to the piano, in the foyer, next to the adjudicator, next to the host, and in the spectator area.
  7. Picking up programs, certificates, and medals and signing in will be made contactless. Hand sanitizer will be available at the check-in desk and at the exit.
  8. Movement throughout the building will be structured so that participants enter and exit from different doors. Participants and spectators will not have access to the washrooms.
  9. Timeliness will be strictly adhered to and breaks will occur between performances

All of these measures are subject to change. Only participants who live in the City of Toronto should attend the festival in-person.

Live, online

How it works

Participants will be sent one date and time at which to perform all of their pieces, recital-style. At the set time, they will join a Zoom meeting and connect to audio via telephone. They should have a stable wifi connection, and their camera should be centered so their fingers and face are visible. No person other than the participant should be visible on camera. After staff ensures that competitors are technologically equipped, they will be sent to a breakout room to perform for the adjudicator. All performances will be livestreamed so that friends and family can watch. Following their performances, participants will be given live adjudication for each piece and detailed written adjudication. At the conclusion of the festival, individual class results will be released, and participants will also receive a certificate, souvenir program, and, should they qualify for one, a medal by mail or curbside pickup at the festival venue.

Recorded

How it works

After registering for the festival, participants will receive a link to submit Youtube links to their recordings. The deadline to submit recordings is April 18. Participants will receive detailed written adjudications by May 14.  At the conclusion of the festival, individual results for each class will be released, and participants will also receive a certificate, souvenir program, and, should they qualify for one, a medal by mail or curbside pickup at the festival venue.

Recording guidelines

We want to ensure our adjudicator can give the best feedback possible. To facilitate this, please ensure entries meet the following guidelines:

1. Uploaded to Youtube as an Unlisted or Public video (NOT Private)

2. Titled "class number - competitor's name - piece and composer" (ie. Class 1 - Glenn Gould - Invention No.1 by Bach)

3. The student's hands and face and the keyboard are visible

4. The camera is centered and remains in the same place throughout the video

5. No person other than the competitor is visible
